Anzac Day commemorations give hope to World War II veteran who saw Sydney Harbour bombed
Nearly 81 years ago, Merv Latham was patrolling Sydney Harbour with the Navy cadets.
"There was a lot of noise and a kerfuffle — we didn't know what it was," he said.
"It was a shock to everybody."
A Japanese mini submarine had breached the harbour's defences, sinking HMAS Kuttabal and killing 21 Australians on board.
World War II had reached Sydney.
