Star’s top legal officer probed on dummy hotel rooms, sham invoices and cloak of legal privilege

 Dummy hotel rooms, sham invoices, and the cloaking of documents in legal privilege were among the key lines of questioning in the third week of a review examining The Star Entertainment Group’s (ASX: SGR) suitability to hold a casino licence. Taking the stand for most of this week in the review by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) of NSW was The Star’s chief legal and risk officer Paula Martin, who was queried several times by Naomi Sharp SC about the truthfulness of her responses. Martin at times had trouble recalling the specific details of significant events in relation to the casino group’s acceptance of China UnionPay cards to fund gambling by Chinese high rollers at its casinos. She also could not recall high-level conversations with senior management in relation to a trip made to the Hong Kong Jockey Club to discuss. The Star’s in-house lawyer reveals a culture of cover-up at casino group

 A grueling two days of questioning for The Star Entertainment Group’s (ASX: SGR) in-house lawyer revealed a culture of cover-up that exposed the casino operator to the potential laundering of up to $900 million in cash from China. In evidence given to the review by the Independent Liquor and Gaming Authority (ILGA) of NSW investigating the group’s suitability to hold a casino licence in the state, The Star’s senior corporate general counsel Oliver White conceded in hindsight that he may have misled Chinese debit card provider China UnionPay (CUP) over the use of funds used by their cardholders. Confirmed today, Victoria has been selected as the host of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, with events to be held across multiple regions, creating a new multi-city model for the event. The state government expects the Commonwealth Games will contribute more than $3 billion to the Victorian economy, creating more than 600 full-time equivalent jobs before the Games, 3,900 during the event, and a further 3,000 beyond the Closing Ceremony.
